چکیده
The presence of many metals at trace or ultra-trace levels in the human environment has received increased global attention (WHO 1977; Hutton 1982; IRPTC 1984). Surveillance of concentrations of heavy metals in the environment is of global interest since elements like cadmium, lead and mercury are listed as environmenta]ly dangerous chemical substances. Sediments as a sink for pollutants are widely recognized pollution sources and diagenesis and biochemical transformations within the sediment may mobilize pollutants posing a threat to a wider Diological community. The natural (Dackground) concentrations of heavy metals in lake sediments can be estimated either by analysis of surface sediments in non-polluted regions or by analysis of core samples antedating m0dern pollution. The degree of contamination of selected rivers and lake sediments by lead, zinc and cadmium bas been reviewed by W4rren (1981) . Tne distribution pattern of heavy meta]s in tropical freshwater systems has been little studied. Kilham (1972) studied the biogeochemistry of African lakes and rivers. Onyari (19~5) round increased concentrations of lead and other trace metals in Lake Victoria. Thus this study was initiated in order to further investigate the distribution patterns of lead and other metals in Lake Victoria.

Potentially Toxic Elements Contamination in Sediment, Surface and Pore water of Maharlu Saline Lake, South - West Iran
Maharlu Lake, located in the SW of Iran, has acted as a sink for various wastewater discharges in the last few decades. This study aimed at assessing potentially toxic elements (PTEs) distribution in sediment, surface and pore water samples of Maharlu Lake. To achieve that, the samples were collected from each compartment and the total concentration of PTEs (Al, Fe, Sc, Cr, Co, Ni, Zn, As, Sb, ...

Levels of the heavy metals Copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn), Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), Chromium (Cr), Nickel (Ni), Iron (Fe) and Manganese (Mn) were determined by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometer (Model 67OG) in coastal water, sediments and soft tissues of the Saccostrea cucullata, from the intertidal zone at five stations in the Gulf of Chabahar on the Iranian coasts along the Oman Se...
متن کاملOccurrence, risk assessment, and source apportionment of heavy metals in surface sediments from Khanpur Lake, Pakistan
Background: The present study was carried out to assess the seasonal variations, source apportionment, and risk assessment of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, and Zn) in the surface sediments from the Khanpur Lake, Pakistan. Methods: Composite samples are collected and processed to measure the concentrations of heavy metals in Ca(NO3)2 extract and acid extract of the sediments using flame ...
متن کاملDistribution of heavy metals in sediments of Igbede, Ojo and Ojora rivers of Lagos, Nigeria
The distribution of some heavy metals, namely Cd, Pb, Zn, Fe, Cu, Cr and Mn in epipellic sediments of Igbede, Ojo and Ojora rivers of Lagos was studied weekly in the early summer (November) of 2003. The levels of selected trace metals were determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (UNICAM 969 AAS SOLAR). Trends in heavy metal burdens in the sediments revealed weekly variations in all...
متن کاملContribution of Catchment and Anthropogenic Activities to Metal Bioavailability in the Lake Victoria Sediments using Sequential Extraction and Radiotracer Analysis
Sequential extraction and radiotracer analyses were used to evaluate the geochemical partitioning of metals (Pb, Cd, Cr, and Cu) in the sediments of Lake Victoria to partition the contribution of catchment areas. Highest total concentration and enrichments of Pb, Cd and Cr occurred near river inlets from polluted urban areas discharging municipal effluents into the rivers. Partitioning coeffici...
